LAUSD breaks ground on south region elementary school #2

(Los Angeles, CA) – Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) officials and community members today broke ground on South Region Elementary School #2, located near the intersection of 74th Street and Central Avenue.

“A new elementary school in the community of Florence-Firestone will bring positive returns for students for generations to come,” LAUSD Board Member Dr. Richard Vladovic said. “One of the most important investments we can make for education in this neighborhood and across the District is to ensure our students have access to adequate school housing.”

South Region Elementary School #2 is scheduled to open in time for the 2010-2011 school year and will provide overcrowding relief to nearby Miramonte, Parmelee, McKinley and 66th Street elementary schools.

“What a wonderful thing when we are able to make this world a better place for our children,” Florence-Firestone Chamber of Commerce President Lorna Johnson said. “We look forward to this new school opening in two years.”

The 1,050-seat campus will include classrooms, a library, multi-purpose room, food service area and lunch shelter, administration offices, playfields and underground parking.

“It is exciting to break ground on a school that is going have a substantial, positive impact on nearby neighborhood schools by relieving them of overcrowded conditions,” LAUSD Acting Chief Facilities Executive for New Construction Fred Smith said.

South Region Elementary School #2 is part of the LAUSD’s $12.6 billion school construction program to build 132 schools by 2012. The program is designed to provide a neighborhood school on a traditional calendar for every student eliminate involuntary busing and create small learning communities in secondary schools. To date, LAUSD has completed 72 new schools and 59 additions, providing more than 74,000 new classroom seats for students throughout the District.

UCLA NanoSystems Institute

In 2007 Telenet VoIP, Inc. completed the Information Transport Structured Cabling system for UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) . This work comprised of over 2600 CAT-6 cable drops, 800+ fiber terminations, underground copper splicing, and data room build outs.

Upon its completion CNSI moved into this 188,000 square foot, world-class research facility on the UCLA campus. Strategically located on the Court of Science amid the disciplines that comprise the CNSI membership, Life and Physical Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, the CNSI facility will provide critical space for new research initiatives and sophisticated laboratories to support its mission to encourage university collaborations with industry and to enable the rapid commercialization of discoveries in nanosystems.

The seven-story structure includes state-of-the art shared Core Research Laboratories including the Electron Imaging Center of Nanomachines, Advanced Light Microscopy/Spectroscopy, Nano and Pico Characterization, Coherent Imaging, Quantum Information Research, Class 100 and Class 1000 Clean Rooms (including 2 Class 1000 Clean Rooms dedicated to nanobio research), the Macro-Scale Small Animal Imaging Facility, and Molecular Screening Shared Resource in specifically engineered space for low noise and low vibration to house sophisticated equipment such as Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Atomic Force Microscope, and eBeam Writer.

In addition to the expansive laboratory space, the new building offers vast community space designed to stimulate interaction and collaboration among researchers. The common areas, equipped with wireless network throughout, include six outdoor terraces with seating areas on upper levels, a 260-seat theater, lobby space, eleven conference and break rooms equipped with kitchenettes, and an Interaction space set up with movable tables and comfortable chairs amid track-driven whiteboard screens that move to create smaller discussion spaces.

The new CNSI building creates vast opportunities for scholarly achievement and visionary research. Telenet VoIP, Inc. is proud to have been a partner in building the Voice, and Data infrastructure for this world class facility.
